Beach Info
Tawharanui Beach (Anchor Bay) is a great destination for a day out. Take a picnic, or book in and stay overnight at the camping ground. The beach can get good surf, but be aware that the waves may dump during outgoing tides.
Tāwharanui Regional Park is set on the eastern end of the Peninsula. The park boasts some of our region's most beautiful white sand beaches, rolling pastures, shingled bays, native coastal forest and regenerating wetlands.
Rip currents are common along the beach, particularly adjacent to the rocks. The beach is now patrolled by surf lifeguards. Swimmers should make sure they swim between the red and yellow flags, stay within their limits, and keep young children within arm's reach. If in doubt stay out. If you're planning on taking paddle craft out, make sure you check the conditions first, especially the wind as it may be stronger than it first seems. Inflatables are not recommended during offshore winds.
