Beach Info
Located a short walk from the carpark at Karekare beach, the 30m high falls cut through remnants of the volcanic Waitākere Ranges, cascading into a large plunge pool surrounded by ferns and other native fauna. Karekare Waterfall was a filming location in the 1993 film, The Piano. Take care at submerged and slippery rocks present a hazard. Remember to stay safe when swimming in freshwater. Swimming in rivers and water holes can be dangerous. Fresh water is less buoyant than sea water, especially around the base of waterfalls where the water is aerated (full of air bubbles). It is easier to sink and takes a lot more energy to float in freshwater than in sea water.
