Beach Info
Located on Auckland's rugged West Coast, Maukatia Bay (Maori Bay) is directly south of Muriwai Beach. The black (iron rich) sands contrast the the white gannets which nest seasonally between Maukatia Bay and Muriwai Beach.
At the top of the steep path down to Maukatia Bay is the internationally recognised Muriwai megapillow lava flows. Around 20 million years ago, a massive volcano erupted underwater. The subsequent cooling of the lava resulted in the columns and pillows we see on the cliff above the carpark at Maukatia Bay today. The Muriwai megapillows became a Geological Heritage Site in August 2024.
Maukatia Bay is popular with surfers. Swimmers (and surfers) may prefer to swim at the lifeguarded Muriwai Beach as opposed to Maukatia Bay which is not lifeguarded.
