Beach Info
This popular fishing and swimming spot in the Hokianga Harbour is found by turning off SH12 onto Old Wharf Road. Omapere is the sister village to Opononi 3.5 km up the harbour. Opononi became famous in 1955-56 because of Opo the friendly bottlenose dolphin. Located at the end of Old Wharf Road in Omapare is a sheltered beach ideal for swimming. Tidal currents and changes in water depth are the common hazards. The severity of these hazards changes with the rise and fall of the tide, so beachgoers need to be aware of this. Beach users should also be aware of deep water, diving into shallow water and submerged objects. There is no Lifeguard Service, so all water users should exercise caution when entering the water for any activity.
