Beach Info
Waiwera Beach is a great spot, for a swim. However, little beach remains at high tide. Alternatively, enjoy the grassed area on the southern end of the beach. Interestingly, Waiwera sits above a geothermal reservoir and aptly, Waiwera means 'Hot Water' in Māori.
There are sudden changes in water depth and strong currents around the Waiwera River Mouth and along the beach; currents become particularly strong during outgoing tides. The beach is not patrolled, so if you head in, stay within your limits and go with a friend. Better yet, head to Orewa Beach or Wenderholm Beach and swim between the red and yellow flags. If you're planning on heading out on a boat, paddle craft, or sail craft, make sure you check the conditions first, wear a correctly fitted lifejacket, and take all of the right gear.
